The Maryland Tier I renewable energy certificate market presents an attractive destination for wind farms located in Midcontinent Independent System Operator’s footprint. It is a new scenario that capitalizes on the growing premium for Maryland Tier I RECs compared with the alternatives available to MISO-based wind farms. Apart from long-term power purchase agreements, these wind farms can sell their RECs on the spot market in states like Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin, or in the voluntary market.
